Many of us have the typical oak bathroom vanity that
builders have been installing in homes across America for the last 20-30 years.
After a few kids and a few years of
daily abuse, I'll bet your once stylish vanity is starting to look worn and dated. Here
is a budget friendly way to solve that problem and give new life to your
bathroom.
Before: Typical oak bathroom vanity.
Next, sand the entire surface with 100 grit sandpaper. Once the gloss of the varnish finish is removed, sand it a second time with a 220 grit sandpaper. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that may cling to the cabinet. Wipe it down with a lightly moistened cloth to remove any dust that remains.
Apply a generous coat of a high quality bonding primer. I recommend an oil base product for the primer coat. You can use a standard or foam brush and you can even use a foam roller on the flat areas.
Once the primer has dried, check to make sure the surface is
smooth. If there are any runs or uneven surfaces sand them out with 400 grit
sandpaper. Take care not to sand through the primer coat. If you do, touch-up
that area with additional primer.
Now you’re ready to apply the finish color coat. Choose a color that best compliments your floor covering and wall color. You can use
either oil base or latex paint. Latex is easier to work with because you can
clean-up with water. Oil base is arguably more durable. In my opinion it’s a
toss-up due to the fact that latex paint formulas have advanced tremendously
in recent years. Whichever you choose, make sure you buy the most premium
quality paint you can get. My advice: Shop where the pros shop!
For the larger, flat areas you can use a foam roller. You
will need a high quality brush to get the edges and details. I always recommend
two coats but you can be the judge.
Next, purchase some new, contemporary cabinet hardware. You
now have a fresh and contemporary looking bathroom vanity to rival a new installation! For a fraction of the cost!
If this seems like too much work for you to tackle, a local
handyman service can do it for you at a very reasonable cost.
