Kitchen backsplashes are an easy, yet affordable way to add the ultimate finishing touch to your kitchen design. There is a wide variety of materials and patterns to choose from that are sure to enhance your kitchen's style.

Ceramic and porcelain tile are both durable, wipe-clean surfaces. Tile also comes in natural stones like slate and travertine. Stone products are porous but they can be sealed. Although they are not the wipe-clean surface that porcelain is, it’s hard to beat the beauty of natural stone.

The many decorative inlays and accents available make all tile choices very customizable. The vast selection of shapes, sizes and colors can easily be configured into your one-of-a-kind kitchen backsplash. The backsplash pictured above uses Kendall Slate from DAL Tile. The color is Carlisle Black. As you can see, it looks great with an Uba Tuba granite countertop. The 2x2 deco tiles were purchased at Lowe's.

Beaded-board backsplashes are a popular selection when creating a country or cottage style design. They are also less expensive than tile! You can find bead board paneling at Home Depot and Lowes. Always use a primer before applying your finish color.

Budget Kitchen Makeover

Painting your old cabinets is a low-cost way to give your kitchen a brand new look. The birch cabinets in this 1980s ranch-style home were worn and scratched. The dark stain color made the space feel dreary and confined.

 

To solve this problem, the cabinet hardware was removed, the cabinets were sanded to remove the scratches and help the new paint to bond. They were given one coat of a high quality bonding primer. Little nicks and dings were filled with wood putty and sanded. Next, a bead board backsplash was added above the original laminate countertop. Bead board is much cheaper than installing tile and is a nice accent for a country or cottage style kitchen.

 The cabinets and bead board were given two coats of brilliant white paint in a semi-gloss finish. The cabinet hardware, kitchen faucet and light fixture were all updated with contemporary selections in a brushed nickel finish.

The walls were painted in a satin-gloss, light blue color. Cherry red accessories provide the “pop color” for the space. The result is an updated kitchen with a fresh, clean look that feels bright and cheerful. The brilliant white cabinets make the kitchen feel larger than it actually is! All at a fraction of the cost of a full scale remodel!
